| Class One,
led by Bill Cobb
November Adult One Studies
Beginning Sunday October 30th for two weeks we'll explore the role
of angels in spirituality. Angels are often mentioned in the Bible
and they have played important roles in Christian spirituality through
the centuries. Tradition asserts that, unlike God, angels can be
both seen and heard. Therefore, as God's representatives, angels
offer a way to envision God's earthly presence and they also present
God's message by showing us:
how God is active in the world
how we mortals may enter into God's presence
whether God protects us in times of physical or moral danger
how God guides us in the right course of action
what happens when we depart from God's way by succumbing to temptation
Beginning November 13th we’ll examine Micah 6:8, "[God]
has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require
of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly
with your God?"
In this three Sunday series, we will explore its far-reaching meaning
for life lived long ago and life lived today. The text has stood
the test of time and has more to teach than may seem visible on
the surface.
Beginning November 27th we begin a four week Advent Study entitled
“ From Longing to Receiving.”
Bill Cobb will be leading the discussion. Please consider attending.
Everyone is welcome. There will be no tests. :-)

Two, led by Jack Boger.
Adult 2 Class Studies "The Present Word”
Jesus is central in the Gospel of John, and the church has long
looked at the descriptions and words of Jesus as a rich source of
theological understanding. From the profound first words of the
Gospel – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1) – through
the narratives of Jesus’ words, deeds, and resurrection appearances,
John’s Gospel was written “so that you may come to believe
that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing
you may have life in his name” (20:31).
Please join us Sunday mornings as we discuss how John’s Gospel
sees Jesus as “The Word”.

THE READING DISCIPLES
CLASS
will begin on September 11. Last year we read The Brothers Karamazov
by Fyodor Dostoevsky. To begin this year, we will read Plato's short
dialogue, Meno.
Meno is one of the earlier Platonic dialogues which seeks to define
ethical terms, in this case, virtue, and fails to find a satisfactory
definition. As in all Socratic dialogues, we are invited to join
in Plato's discussion of the essential characteristics of knowledge
and truth.
In the second half of the first meeting, we will review all suggestions
and vote on the next novel. We are excited to meet again and can't
wait to see what suggestions there are and, as always, all are welcome.
There should be free versions of Meno online. I can make copies
for anyone who has trouble securing a translation- just let Matt
Baltensberger know. |
